This is an example of something I think is incredibly wrong with America.
To better understand my complaint, read the following article: goo.gl/kUxcN
To sum this up, a family is being interviewed who are "Getting By" on 50k a year".
EXCUSE ME? Getting by? Perhaps I'm mistaken, but it seems like 50k a year is a pretty good income for a family. It's more than my family makes, although I don't have kids to worry about yet.
Some of the complaints in this article upset me.
"We could probably find a cheaper apartment to live in, but it is worth it to us to pay a little bit more and not have to worry about the neighborhood we live in"
This statement alone explains it all. It may as well read, "We don't want to live around minorities, and our problem really isn't an actual problem... just a perceived one."
I'd Also Venture the Guess that they spend too much money..."We splurge on our cable, because it is our entertainment." The average digital cable customer already pays almost $75 a month (source). That's $900 per year that family could save just by getting more exercise.
If they have to be lazy, the last time I checked the public library has a plethora of free movies which families can check out at no charge.
I'm not saying they're totally wrong, or bad, or whatever, but this does not strike me as news. These folks don't have to make huge sacrifices, and their worries are no different than anyone elses. Their situation would be much better with a little more work and sacrifice.
Their Worries Aren't Even REAL (yet...)
"I'm not worried about the everyday, for example not being able to put food on the table or buy diapers or gas, but I worry about emergencies. I worry that our cars, which are both older models, might give out on us and we don't have the extra cash flow to fix (them)."
When I was growing up my Mom cooked deer meat that my grandfather and uncles killed and told us it was beef. She did worry about putting food on the table. When we'd drive to see that side of the family about 3 hours away, my grandfather would pay for her gas... she did worry about gas.
There are people right now with life in such worse shape, that "middle America", I don't pity you (us). We have it good, even if we can't afford luxuries. We have clean drinking water, we have houses, we have food.
Everyone worries about emergencies, but not all the time. Everyone has car problems. Those realities don't merit a writeup on a national news site.
I'm so sick of this "We are the 99%" crap. Geeze America, grow up and stop complaining. Or at least do it in a blog that nobody reads, like I do.
